What Is the Best Time of Day for a Portrait Session?

Golden hour, blue hour, oh my!

One of the most common questions I get as a photographer is: “What’s the best time of day for my photo shoot?” The truth is, it depends. While there are general times photographers love because of the lighting, the ideal time also depends on your location, the season, and even your personality.

Let’s break down the types of light and other factors to consider when planning your photo session.

Types of Light for Photo Sessions

Golden Hour

This is the most talked-about time for portraits, and for good reason. Golden hour happens the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset. With the sun low in the sky, the light is warm, soft, and flattering. It creates that dreamy glow that looks amazing in portraits.

Blue Hour

Blue hour takes place just after sunset and just before sunrise. The light is cooler and moodier, perfect if you love dramatic tones and softer, more romantic vibes.

Sunset

Sunset sessions can be magical, but also very weather dependent. The 30 minutes before the sun dips below the horizon, and more so, the 30 minutes after, create colorful, vibrant skies. Locations with wide-open views, like beaches, fields, or mountaintops, work beautifully for sunset photography.

Direct Sunlight

Direct sunlight means being out in the open without shade. While harsh midday sun can be tricky, direct light during golden hour or blue hour creates striking results. Avoid midday whenever possible (where the sun is overhead) if you’re at a location with no shade, especially on clear, sunny days.

Overcast Days

Overcast days are a photographer’s best friend! Think of the clouds as a giant softbox in the sky, diffusing the light evenly. Here in Portland, one of the top 5 cloudiest cities in the US, we’re lucky to have plenty of overcast skies, which means soft, flattering light all day long.

Open Shade

Open shade comes from large trees, pavilions, or buildings that block direct sunlight without completely enclosing the space. It’s perfect for avoiding harsh shadows and keeping the light soft and natural.

Other Things to Consider

Weather

Weather doesn’t just affect light; it also impacts your comfort. Cold winter mornings or windy evenings might not feel ideal. Cloudy skies, on the other hand, often create perfect shooting conditions. Always plan with both light and comfort in mind.

Environment & Location

Mountains, tall trees, and buildings can block sunlight earlier than expected. If there’s a feature at your location you want highlighted, it’s best to scout the area (if possible) to see how the light falls at different times of day.

Your Natural Rhythm

Are you a morning person or a night owl? Scheduling your session when you feel most energized will help you feel more comfortable in front of the camera. If kids are joining, consider nap and meal times so everyone is at their best.

Hours of Operation

If your shoot is at a park, venue, or other property, check their hours. Some locations close at sunset, while others allow access after dark. Always confirm ahead of time.

So, When Is the Best Time for a Photo Shoot?

The best time of day for your photo shoot depends on your goals, your location, and your lifestyle. For that glowing, golden look, schedule around sunrise or sunset. For moody vibes, blue hour is perfect. Overcast skies give you flexibility all day long. And above all, choose a time when you’ll feel comfortable and relaxed, as it always makes for the best photos.
